Colorado - Easter 'Zu

Introduction

Easter 'Zu, was organized by Keith Ellingford. It was originally just a Colorado warm-up run for Moab, but being as it ended up falling on Easter Sunday, we jokingling have started to refer to the ride as Easter 'Zu. By concensus, the group in Denver decided it would be best to run Hackett Gulch and Longwater Canyon.

The Trails

Sunday (photos)
We all met in the parking lot of a bar and grill in the small town of Sedalia, just south of Denver. Arrival times varied from around 8:45 am to 9:15 and by 9:30 we were on our way up into the mountains.

The Rigs

A pretty good showing. we had 4 Isuzu Amigos, Me with my a stock White '99, Corbin with his lifted and locked White '98 Amigo, Keith and his lifted Black '99 and Jeff with a lifted Black '99 hardtop. Rounding out the pack were two honorary Isuzus, Scott in his White '99 Jeep Wrangler, and Erik with a Black '98 Toyota Tacoma.

Highlights

We actually ran the equivalent of two trails this day. Hackett has a few nice obstacles, including Hackett Rock and a nice mud and gravel mogul climb. As well as spectacular views, there were a few steep descents that kept you near the edge of slipping. Our first river crossing went well, with Erik and the Tacoma in the lead. Bolstered by our success, we decided to run Longwater back, and temp the Teller County Car Wash to see if we could do it. It was during this crossing that we discovered how well the Amigo and Wrangler float. Two more major hurdles awaited us after the crossing, the first being a small climb, similar to the mogul field on Hackett that required aiming for a small tree to get up, and the second being a nasty slick rock. We had to threaten my Amigo with a strap on the rock (the only strap brought out that day), but it finally decided it would rather climb than be strapped. The last fun thing we found was a downed tree across the trail. We saw where other vehicles had driven around, and thought it would be best if we cleared the trail. Jeff had laughed when he saw I had a hatchet in my tool kit, but now he carries one too.
