Radical Hill and Mt. Bross

Introduction

Getting ready for the upcoming Colorado 'Zu II, a group of Isuzu owners (with the odd Jeep or Toyota in there) got together to pre-run a trail expected to be run during the 'Zu. We ended up with 8 or 9 vehicles on this particular day.

The Trails

Radical Hill
This being my first time up Radical Hill i didn't know what to really expect. Turned out to be a lot of really steep climbs on a shelf road. Great views, but stay away from the edge.

Mt. Bross
One of the many 14,000+ ft. mountains in Colorado, Mt. Bross is part of a threesome of 14ers just outside Alma, near South Park.

Highlights

This was the first chance I had to test out my new CP lift and I loved it. I was very impressed with how my Amigo handled with the newly gained ground clearance. It's not that the trails were really challenging, but there were some magnificent views to be had. The trip started out with a casual drive up I-70 headed towards Loveland Ski Area. Taking the Hwy. 6 turn off, we continued on about another 12 miles, hitting the trailhead in a small town (don't remember the name). A very scenic drive up through the pine led us into what seemed to be a glacial valley, with soaring peaks and long sloping verdant hills. The wildflowers were in bloom and it make for a very Colorado scene. Remnants of old mining shacks are still visible on the hill sides, and the start up Radical Hills brings you very close to one of them. At the top of the mountain (that still had snow in late July), wild goats can often be spotted. Coming down the back side, you travel through a heavily wooded area, slowing changing from Pine to Aspen until you get to the back roads into Breckenridge.

Mt. Bross turned out to be a very easy drive, possibly passable in a passenger car, but there are a few steep sections on loose mining tailings and some very tight switchbacks. The entire climb is up a shelf road and a few moments of carelessness could result in a long tumble to the bottom. Only one section to really note, an off-camber patch that sits very close to the edge. It didn't bother me, but some people find it unnerving.
